Valley Club Poker nights
Valley Club is partnered with 10 bars for 12 games a week in McAllen, Mission
and Laredo, and Ron Rodriguez is working on expanding his business to the
Mid-Valley and Brownsville.
As long as the televised poker games keep piquing people’s interest, he will
likely find plenty of players to fill his tables wherever he goes in the Valley.
Even though they’re not gambling for money, players new and old flock to the
games because they want to hone their skills and pal around with people who have
a common interest. Most harbor the longshot desire to be on the World Series of
Poker. Some come for stress relief.

Imagine seeing a sight that
was enjoyed nearly one hundred years ago. IMAS is proud to
present, on loan from the private collection of Dr. Lawrence
Gelman, a compilation of stained glass windows originating from
St. Paul's Church in Albany, New York and dating back 1914. This
wonderful exhibition of religious iconography will also feature
windows produced by the famed glass company, Tiffany Studios.
IMAS invites the public to immerse itself in viewing the
splendor of an art form that has graced the walls of churches,
cathedrals, and other religious architecture of the world. The
gallery is designed and finely crafted to replicate the backdrop
for such an ethereal event.

The Brownsville Heritage
Complex in historic downtown Brownsville invites the public to
view the exhibit Ladrillos Y Mezcla (Bricks & Mortar): The
History of Brick and its Contribution to the Architecture of the
Lower Rio Grande Corridor.
The exhibit will be on display in the Aiken Education Center
inside the Brownsville Heritage Museum from April 26 to June 8,
2007 during regular museum hours. Cost to view the exhibit is
included in the price of admission.
Inspired by the research and presentation of the history of
brick in the Rio Grande Valley by local businessman, artist,
historian and architect Manuel Hinojosa, this exhibit explores
the history of bricks and architecture of the lower Rio Grande
Valley corridor through historic photographs, artifacts, and
drawings.
Ladrillos Y Mezcla (Bricks & Mortar): The History of Brick and
its Contribution to the Architecture of the Lower Rio Grande
Corridor , produced by the Museums of Port Isabel (MoPI), was
first displayed at the Treasures of the Gulf Museum in Port
Isabel last fall and will travel to other venues thereafter.
The origin of brick making in the lower Rio Grande River
borderlands evolved from the Mesoamerican and Spanish Colonial
elements of centuries of adobe brick making. Shortages of rock
building materials that were abundant in the early colonization
of Nuevo Santander were a major factor in the introduction of a
clay-fired brick to the newly formed town site of Matamoros,
Mexico.
As a result of the shortage, an eclectic architecture was
created when local brick masons incorporated Spanish, New
Orleans and later classical elements into building details on
both sides of the Rio Grande River.
The handmade brick industry continued to manifest during the
1900s, when the new economy was fueled by the creation of new
cities by the Anglo-American migrations to the Rio Grande
Valley.

It’s not often a child’s
photos become a piece of history, but 14-year-old John E. Huegal
captured the ending of one era and the start of another in
photos he took from 1944 to 1961. Huegal captured images of the
end of the steam era in Mexican railroads and the beginning of
the move into diesel-powered engines in 30 photographs that are
featured in the exhibit Recordando Aquellos Placenteros Viajes
(Remembering Those Pleasant Trips).
The exhibit will open, free to the public, with a reception
at the Brownsville Heritage Complex on Thursday, May 31, 2007 at

The exhibit will also be on view until July 6, 2007 at the

The fourth Vela Family
Reunion of approximately 3,000 descendents will take place June
14-17, 2007, in McAllen. The last reunion was held more than 10
years ago and boasted approximately 2,000 attendees.
The Vela family, full of history and accomplishments, has a
recorded history that begins in the year 1519 in the Lower Rio
Grande Valley with the exploration of the “Rio de Palmas.” The
first town established in February 1749 was Nuestra Senora of
Santa Ana de Camargo, in March of 1749 the town of Reynosa was
established and in 1752 Mier was founded. These three
communities are where the Vela family resided before crossing
the Rio Grande. Family members include business leaders,
doctors, lawyers and politicians.

Adventure and discovery
await children during this year’s Heritage Discovery Summer Camp
for children, at the Brownsville Heritage Complex. From June
18-21 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., participants (ages 9-12) will
discover history, art and culture through hands-on activities,
presentations, and field trips. The camp will take place at the
Brownsville Heritage Complex at 1325 E. Washington St., and
total cost is $20 per child. Space is limited, so participants
are encouraged to sign up early.
Unique learning activities such as historic walking tours, field
trips, history scavenger hunts and art and craft lessons are the
hallmark of BHA’s yearly camp for children.
Jessica Villescaz, BHA curator and last year’s camp coordinator,
said children become excited about history during the program.
“They begin to get curious and ask questions about local
historic figures like Charles Stillman,” she says.
This year, board member and Mexico City native Debbie Backal
will oversee camp activities and contribute additional learning
experiences such as “Around the World” adventures.
Summer camp participants embark on a “trip” around the world
through lessons, activities and food. Each day they will visit a
different country and experience what life is like for the
children living in these countries. Participants will be issued
a passport and will have the opportunity to learn about the
countries of Mexico, Peru, Egypt, China and Italy.

The University of Texas at
Brownsville and Texas Southmost College Arts and Entertainment
Series invites the public to the its 2007 season performances.
Rita Moreno is the only female performer to have won all four of
the most prestigious show business awards: the Oscar, the Emmy,
the Tony, and the Grammy. She has, in fact been listed in the
Guinness Book of World Records for this achievement. She earned
the Oscar for her performance as Anita in the 1962 motion
picture, West Side Story, the two Emmys for her 1977 appearance
on The Muppet Show, and for a dramatic guest appearance on The
Rockford Files in 1978. She won the Tony for her 1975 triumph on
Broadway as Googie Gomez in The Ritz, the Grammy for her 1972
performance on The Electric Company Album for children.
It may be said that Rita Moreno, who has portrayed an Irish
teacher, an Italian widow, a reformed prostitute, a lady
evangelist, an English lady, and a southern belle, has broken
the rigid role of Latino stereotyping.
